Boerboel
A large, heat-hardy South African mastiff, the Boerboel is a powerful, calm farm guardian that is very protective of its family.
History and origins
The Boerboel was developed in South Africa by farmers of European descent, from imported mastiffs, to protect isolated farms from predators and intruders.
It is recognised by South African organisations but not by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.
Temperament
Calm, confident and very attached to its family, the Boerboel is a natural guardian. It can be dominant and wary of strangers and other dogs.
Its strength calls for early socialisation, firm training and an experienced owner.
Some regions restrict ownership of this breed; check your local regulations.
Health
Hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems and bloat should be monitored.
Choose a breeder who screens their breeding dogs.
