Bernese Mountain Dog
A handsome tricolour dog from the Swiss Alps, the Bernese is gentle, loyal and excellent with families, but copes very badly with heat.
History and origins
The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the canton of Bern in Switzerland, where it guarded farms, drove cattle and pulled carts of milk and cheese.
It is the only long-haired breed among the four Swiss mountain dogs.
Temperament
Calm, affectionate and very attached to its family, the Bernese is gentle with children and usually sociable with other animals.
Sensitive, it learns well with positive training and dislikes being left alone.
Health
Its life expectancy is short, largely because of a high rate of cancers (including histiocytic sarcoma). Hip and elbow dysplasia and bloat are also reported.

Feeding
Puppies should grow slowly on large-breed food. Adults: two meals and a controlled weight.
Avoid exercise after meals.
Exercise
It needs about an hour of daily activity: walks, hikes in cool weather and suitable carting games.
Avoid jumping and intense effort during growth.
It needs a house with a shady garden rather than an apartment.
Grooming
Its long, thick coat sheds enormously: brush several times a week, daily during the moult.
Do not shave it.
