Pharaoh Hound
Slender and fiery-red, the Pharaoh Hound from Malta is a fast, playful and affectionate hunter that 'blushes' when excited.
History and origins
The Pharaoh Hound is Malta's national dog, used for centuries to hunt rabbits by sight and scent. Despite its name, a link with ancient Egypt has not been proven.
It is recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale with Malta as its country of origin.
Temperament
Playful, affectionate and intelligent, the Pharaoh Hound is gentle with its family and often good with children. It is reserved with strangers.
Its hunting instinct is strong. Its ears and nose may flush pink when excited, hence the saying that it 'blushes'.
Health
This is a robust breed. Like other very lean dogs, it can be sensitive to some anaesthetics, so tell your veterinarian.
It dislikes the cold.
