Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier was developed in England to bolt foxes from their earths during mounted hunts. Its mostly white coat made it easy to tell apart from the fox.

It was among the first breeds shown at dog shows in the 19th century.

Quick, curious and very energetic, the Fox Terrier is a cheerful companion attached to its family. It has a strong hunting instinct, barks readily and can be intolerant of other dogs.

It needs consistent training and varied activities.

This is a robust breed. Lens luxation, some skin conditions and deafness should be monitored.

Regular veterinary follow-up is recommended.

Food for small active dogs, in suitable portions, suits it.

Watch its weight.

It needs at least an hour of intense activity a day: running, ball games and agility.

Keep it on a lead outside fenced areas.

It can live in an apartment if it gets plenty of exercise; otherwise it becomes noisy and destructive.

Its short, dense coat needs weekly brushing. It sheds steadily.

Check its ears and nails.
